The Solution: The Davis Dyslexia Correction® Programs

When equipped with the right tools, people with dyslexia can intentionally control and correct their perceptions. The Davis™ techniques are easy to learn. Dyslexic adults and children learn them very quickly.

"Dyslexia is not a complexity; it is compound of simple factors which can be dealt with step by step". Ron Davis

Orientation

The first step is to show the client an effective technique to get oriented when they become confused and experience disorientation.

"A simple procedure called Davis Orientation Counseling teaches the dyslexic a technique for terminating or turning off disorientations. Once the person learns how to eliminate the multiple perceptions, he can experience a consistent undistorted viewpoint whenever he wishes. Once the technique is learned, it is simple to do anywhere and takes less than a second." (Davis, Ronald D, and Eldon Braun. 1994, 1997. The Gift of Dyslexia. Perigee Trade. p. 63)

Clients are facilitated and supported using this procedure until they can do it quickly and easily and know that they have done it. They take full responsibility for the use of the technique once they become comfortable using it.

Now that a key symptom of dyslexia is being dealt with, the next step is to resolve the underlying cause. Every dyslexic needs to be able to think with the symbols and words that trigger disorientation.

We must resolve confusion with those symbols and words without pictures.

Mastery

Davis techniques and tools are used to eliminate triggers of disorientation and to ensure the correct perceptions of all symbols and words to the point of mastery. Mastery creates certainty and improved performance all around.

The Davis™ program not only uses the nonverbal imaginative talents of the dyslexics but it is understood that learning should be pleasurable so one can use their natural capacity to remember what was learned.

As a result, the process of Symbol Mastery was created.

"When someone has mastered something, they have learned it so well they can do it without thinking about what they are doing. Mastering something is really learning it". (Davis, 1994, 1997, p. 111)

The Davis Symbol Mastery® procedure consists of having the person create the meaning of a word or symbol as a 3 dimensional picture. These are done using clay. It uses not only the multi-sensory process, but also the creative process. This combination establishes a lasting mental image for retention and stops the disorientation.

Mastery of the alphabet, punctuation marks and speech sounds are addressed first to lay the best foundation.

Now Symbol Mastery is used to create 3 dimensional models of the meaning of abstract words such as "the." This technique is fun and adventurous. The client experiences success and they have a true positive learning experience.

By mastering the definitions of these words clients vastly improve their comprehension and reading skills in a fun and supported way.

In addition the Davis Program uses:

  • Simple reading exercises to build sequencing and comprehension skills.
  • Dial Setting and Release techniques to control one's energy to match the situation or task.
  • Koosh® Ball exercises to address dyspraxia and left/right confusion
  • Unique yet highly successful techniques to correct handwriting problems quickly

The combination of the motivated client, the Davis procedures, and the trained Davis facilitator is a recipe for success.
